Intel, SGI Test 3M Liquid Cooling Technology

The two-phase process involves submerging the system in 3M's Novec fluid, a process officials said may reduce data center cooling costs by 95 percent.
Intel and SGI are using a supercomputer to test a data center cooling technology that calls for the system to be fully submerged in a liquid developed by 3M.

Officials with the three companies say that the cooling method could save as much as 95 percent in the cost of cooling the data center and significantly reduce the floor space needed for the infrastructure.

Keeping the data center cool enough to avoid problems caused by heat has been an issue for organizations for years. Heat can cause a range of headaches for IT administrators, from huge power bills and system failures to shorter component life and environmental concerns. System and component makers have been working to make their products more energy-efficient, and data center administrators use a variety of methods—like hot/cold aisles, massive air conditioning units and outside air—to keep the facilities cool.

Using liquid to keep the systems cooler has been experimented with for years, from IBM's Rear Door Heat Exchanger technology, which can be installed on server rack doors and uses chilled water, to other immersive liquids. Fujitsu last year introduced a new cooling technology called Liquid Loop Cooling, which uses a combination of liquid and air. Intel two years ago worked with a company called Green Revolution Cooling, whose CarnoJet System keeps systems cool by submerging them in a dielectric fluid called GreenDEF. The liquid is a blend of white mineral oil that company officials say has 1,200 times the heat capacity by volume than air. They said the process can reduce power use related to cooling by as much as 95 percent and the total power consumption of the data center by half.

The need for more efficient cooling systems will only grow as trends like cloud computing, virtualization and the Internet of things promise to increase the demand on data centers for more compute, storage and networking capabilities.

In the proof-of-concept run by Intel, SGI and 3M, the vendors submerged an SGI ICE X—the latest generation of the OEM's distributed memory supercomputer, which runs on Intel's Xeon E5-2600 server chips—into 3M's Novec Engineered Fluid, another dielectric fluid. 3M engineers have developed a two-phase immersion process that they said will reduce cooling energy costs by 95 percent.

It also will mean that organizations will no longer have to rely on municipal water supplies for evaporative cooling—greatly reducing the water consumption in the facility—and that the head taken from the system can be reused for heating systems and other tasks, such as the desalination of sea water, according to 3M officials.

The system works by submerging the system into the Novec fluid. The heat from the system is pulled away by the fluid, and the vapor is released and then condenses, falling back into the bath as liquid.

Because of the tremendous gains in energy efficiency, organizations will be able to more tightly pack components and do more computing in less space. According to 3M, businesses will be able to do the same amount of computing in a 10th of the space used by traditional air-cooled data centers. Using the Novec cooling system, a data center can support 100 kilowatts of computing power in a square meter. By contrast, traditional air-cooled facilities can support up to 10 kilowatts per square meter.

"As the backbone of the data economy, modern data centers must increase the raw performance they deliver, but also do so efficiently by containing power consumption and operating costs," Charles Wuishpard, vice president of Intel's Data Center Group and general manager of workstation and high performance computing at the company, said in a statement.

SGI officials noted that their ICE X supercomputer can scale from tens of teraflops of performance to tens of petaflops, and allows for tighter packaging of components and easy scalability. Having more efficient and less costly ways of managing data center and system cooling will help ICE X customers better leverage capabilities of the supercomputer, they said.

According to the vendors, more in-depth evaluation of the Novec system installation will begin this month. In addition, they also are working with the Naval Research Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and APC by Schneider Electric to evaluate an identical system, with the hope of showing that it can be used in data centers of any scale.

AVG launches Zen, a security app for managing all your devices

AVG launches Zen, a security app for managing all your devices
AVG has announced the launch of its new Zen, a tool to manage the protection, performance, and privacy of all your PC and Android devices from one place. Zen allows you to add any of your and your family's devices, so you can monitor their security remotely.
AVG Zen was first revealed at the Mobile World Congress in February. It gives you a centralized hub where you can see the security status of your various devices, and works with all of AVG's main products: AVG Internet Security, AVG PC TuneUp, AVG PrivacyFix, AVG Antivirus for Android, AVG Cleaner for Android, AVG PrivacyFix for Android and AVG Zen Admin for Android apps.
AVG isn't the only company who sees centralized device management as the future for security apps. We saw Remo MORE at the Mobile World Congress, which lets you optimize performance, manage files and more remotely too.
We spoke to AVG's security evangelist Tony Anscombe in February, who said the company tried to create something that was very easy to use and understand. He said it would give parents the knowledge and power to manage their family's security and privacy settings. The interface is very simple, and clearly shows you the status of each of your connected devices, while making it easy to change the settings on any of them.

FTL: Faster Than Light out now for iPad

FTL: Faster Than Light out now for iPad
FTL: Faster Than Light, the popular PC indie space simulation game, is out now on iPad. This coincides with the release of the free Advanced Edition expansion for the original PC version.
The expansion is free for everyone with the PC game, and the new iPad version also includes the Advanced Edition content. It costs $10, which is the same as the PC release. The developers say 'the iPad version is a true equivalent to the PC in the experience it provides, which is why we are price matching to the PC version.' This means there will be non of the in-app purchases which have become common, and sometimes controversial, in mobile gaming.
FTL is a game about running a spaceship and exploring the galaxy. As captain, you have to 'manage the crew, fix the engines, reroute power to shields, target the enemy life support, and then figure out how to repel the boarders that just transported over!' It was influenced by classic sci-fi like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.
You can buy the game on PC or iPad. Unfortunately there is no demo, although the developers say they 'hope to release one'. Watch this space.

Tips for improving your Gmail productivity

Gmail is one of the most popular online email services in the world. It offers great capacity and seamless integration with other Google tools like Google Drive, thanks to which you can send huge file attachments. It also has an app for iPhone and Android.
But Gmail isn't perfect. Or maybe it's the way we use it. Regardless, the point is that it can be hard to get your inbox under control; Gmail can be used for many things, and its become incorporated so easily into our everyday lives, that it feels like our mailboxes will never be emptied or organized.
How can you fight this invasion of emails? Luckily there are several ways to manage your account. Aside from its relatively new tabs feature, add-ons for Gmail, web services, or even settings in Google itself can enhance your Gmail productivity quickly and conveniently. Let's have a look at these tools in more detail to help you get your inbox under control!

Change the style of your inbox

If you don't receive many messages, you've got it easy: read, answer, file, delete, and go. But for those who receive a large amount of mail each day, this isn't enough. With those users in mind, Gmail has implemented what it calls inbox styles: different ways to present the content in your Gmail mailbox so that you can handle large amounts of mail without losing your mind (or any emails).
Gmail inbox type
You can choose from five inbox styles:
  • Classic - the standard, which puts the most recent posts at the top of your inbox.
  • Important first - priority messages from the contacts you interact with the most, as well as other important messages.
  • Unread first - places unread messages above all others.
  • Starred first - places messages that you've marked with a star at the top of your inbox.
  • Priority - a mixture of the three previous options: combines unread, starred and important so that you don't miss anything.

Enable Gmail Labs

Gmail "Labs" is a collection of experimental features that you can activate if you want to test them. Although they might not work very well or could disappear without notice, little gems can be found among them, including some which will help you work faster and more efficiently in Gmail.
Gmail Labs
One useful feature, for example, is the Auto Advance, which will automatically take you to the next message after you delete or archive the previous one, rather than returning you to the inbox.
Smart Tags is another cool feature, with which you can easily organize all messages that you receive automatically, whether they're notifications, newsletters, message forums or emails from social networks. There's also the role of Standard responses, which saves you a lot of time if you have to write similar email messages every day.

Send emails to yourself in the future

One goal of the perfect email manager is to always keep your inbox clean of pending messages - the coveted inbox zero. The theory is simple: answer every email as soon as you receive it, if you can in just a few minutes. If you don't need to do anything, delete it. And if you've finished the task on that email but want to keep it as a reference, file it.
But what happens if you have to go back to that email within a few days, you're done with it, or are waiting for a response from a third party? That's where these tools come into play:

Boomerang for Gmail

Boomerang for Gmail is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari that allows you to schedule sending emails, meaning you can use them as personal reminders. It also sends you an alert if you're waiting for a response and no one answers your message within a predetermined time-frame.
Boomerang for Gmail
If you get an email asking you to do something that you really need to consult someone else on, you can answer this message, forward it to the relevant person, configure Boomerang to alert you if you don't get an answer within a couple of days, and delete the read message. One step closer to inbox zero!

FollowUp.CC

This curious name belongs to a service that's pretty similar to Boomerang; the only difference is that you don't have to install anything because it works on any browser. The downside of FollowUp.CC is that the free version has a limit of 20 reminders per month.
Working it is really simple: when answering an email that you want to follow up with in a few days, enter a fake email address with the date that you want to be reminded of into the BCC field. Addresses are created in a logical way:
  • Within a few hours: 12hours@followup.cc
  • On a specified day: apr21@followup.cc
  • A day this week: sunday@followup.cc
  • A specific time: 9am@followup.cc
The email will appear as a reminder in your inbox for the time you've set!

HassleMe

So far, we've seen tools that'll send you email reminders when you want to complete a specific task. But what about reminders for recurring tasks that don't have a set time, like going to the gym, calling your mom or practicing an instrument? For these reminders, there's HassleMe.

HassleMe is an online service that'll send you reminders for recurring tasks so that you don't have to worry about forgetting to do them! It can also be used to send phrases of encouragement or motivational quotes for a little extra push of productivity.

The Email Game

The aim of The Email Game is to turn the monotony of sorting through emails into a game, another example of the popular trend of 'gamifying' non-gaming apps. The Email Game challenges you to manage your email in the shortest time possible and rewards you with points if you're quick enough. If the timer reaches zero, you lose points.

The interface of The Email Game is clear, with large buttons that help you make a decision quickly: can you answer that email now? Do it! Do you have to wait? File it for later! Have you finished? Erase it and on to the next !

Quickly edit videos using Free Video Dub

Simple video editing can be done quickly, with the right tools. Here, I'll show you how you can quickly edit videos, for free and without any loss of quality.
Most editing programs are overloaded with complicated functions that you most likely won't need, making it more difficult to get used to the program. Free Video Dub takes a completely different approach: the freeware confines itself to editing alone so that you can quickly trim the video, remove scenes, and save the results. This tutorial will show you how to edit videos using Free Video Dub.

Choose a starting point

Open the video or drag and drop it into the Free Video Dub interface. Drag the button on the timeline to the right until it reaches the point where you want the video to begin. Using the Trim Right function, or the M key, mark the beginning of the video up to the desired starting point. Free Video Dub highlights the selected section in blue. Then, delete the selected area using the Delete button or the DEL key.
Free Video Dub - Buttons
Open the file, use the timeline, select, delete and save - the five steps to being editing your videos

Delete scenes and save the video

To remove a scene from the video, move the button on the timeline to the beginning of the unwanted content. Use the Trim Left function or the N key to select the desired spot. Next, move the button to the end of the unwanted scene and select it using the Trim right function or the M key. The unwanted content should now be marked in blue. Again, you can delete the selected area using the Delete button or the DEL key.
Free Video Dub
You can trim the end of the video using the same procedure. It's useful to point out, however, that pressing the Trim Left button didn't work during our testing. If you're dissatisfied with your selection, you can delete it with the Delete Selection button or the X key.
Once you've removed all the sections you want, save the video by clicking on the corresponding button. Free Video Dub saves the edited video in the source directory with the tag _cut. This means, for example, that dasvideo.avi becomes dasvideo_cut.avi.

Good quality, but a few glitches

It’s handy that Free Video Dub doesn't convert files once they've been saved and edited; it means that you don't lose the video's quality. The result looks the same as the original, but cut to perfection. It's unfortunate that there are a few glitches that cause Free Video Dub’s timeline to freeze. If this does happen, the only solution is to shut down and restart the program. Overall, however, Free Video Dub is a great free and easy-to-use option for quickly editing videos.
